Oatmeal & Banana Smoothie (Day 3 of 6)

Oatmeal &  Banana Smoothie

Yes – we know; day 4 was published yesterday & day 3 today.  We did this for a reason.  Today was projected to be hot, hot, hot, and we thought it more fitting to publish this one today.  You see, in the wintertime, we love nothing more than having a hot & steaming bowl of oatmeal with bananas & dusted with cinnamon and sugar.   Throw in a little brown sugar and it’s like eating crustless pie.  It warms straight through to the soul!

Well…We live in the south and August is just plain hot with today as a GREAT example!  There’s a reason Hollywood depicts southerners fanning themselves sitting in the shade drinking mint juleps!  It’s hot and with that heat, you don’t want to consider eating anything in the morning to heat yourself up.  But we missed our wonderful, soul-feeding oatmeal so much that we decided to make it into a smoothie!  Yes, now we can drink our oatmeal!!!

To Cook or Not to Cook…that was our dilemma; so we tried both cooked oatmeal and the straight out of the box stuff.  Good thing we tried uncooked as well as cooked because, if we had only tried cooked oatmeal smoothies…we would only have 5 smoothie recipes to share with you.  Cooking the oatmeal first makes it downright inedible.  It was pasty and clumpy, and just would not get smooth no matter how much we beat it to death.  In addition, it actually kept getting thicker and thicker and thicker.

We used rolled oats straight out of the box.  We didn’t try instant oats because we don’t own any instant, but we can’t see any reason why instant wouldn’t also work if that’s all you have on hand.

When you’re making this Oatmeal & Banana Smoothie…think very carefully about how you like your hot oatmeal to taste and then add those ingredients.  If you like the molasses taste of dark brown sugar…use dark (we marked it with a * below to remind you).  We love blueberries in our oatmeal, so we used blueberries as a garnish.  You could easily garnish with raisins or nuts or…well, use your imagination.

It sure is great to enjoy our oatmeal on the porch without a fan!  Hope you enjoy it too!

Ciao for Now!

Oatmeal &  Banana Smoothie

  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ¼ cup whole flax seeds
  • ½ cup vanilla yogurt
  • 1 banana, frozen
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • ¼ cup Dixie Crystals light brown sugar*
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Blueberries (optional)

In a blender, add the half and half first, then frozen banana, then oats and the rest of the ingredients. Blend until very smooth. If too thick, add in some extra milk at the end. Pour into a glass and top with your favorite toppings for oatmeal. We added blueberries because we love them and they were a natural with our smoothie!
